Daniel McKenna, the Pirelli Star Driver for 2014, got his season off to a flying start with second place on the Midland Moto Stages Rally last weekend. McKenna, driving a Ford Escort Mk2 fitted with Pirelli’s P7 Classic Historic tyre, finished the event just under 10 seconds behind Paddy McVeigh’s Subaru Impreza WRC.
Arthur Kierans joined McKenna in the co-driver seat for round two of the Midlands East Rally Championship based in Roscommon. The British championship frontrunner said of his result: “I’m delighted to finish second overall in my first event of the season, especially as it was to a Subaru Impreza WRC.
“It was also my first time on the Pirelli P7 Classic tyre, and I can report that the tyres worked exceptionally well in the tricky mixed conditions of the Midland Moto Stages and were a key element in my success. We were three minutes ahead of the closest two-wheel-drive car and only 9.7 seconds off the win after a brilliant battle all day.
“I would like to thank Pirelli for giving me the opportunity to develop these tyres in Ireland, my co-driver Arthur for great pace notes and my service crew for a brilliant job all weekend.”
McKenna’s BRC campaign gets underway on the Pirelli Carlisle RB Foundation Rally from May 3/4. Before then he will tackle the European championship-counting Circuit of Ireland Rally in his Pirelli-shod Citroen DS3 from April 17-19.
