All stations are go for the 2014 Pirelli Star Driver and joint British Rally Championship (BRC) leader Daniel McKenna, as he prepares for this weekend’s RSAC Scottish Rally. The Scottish Rally is the third round of the BRC and after a win apiece on the opening two rounds, Daniel is level on points at the top of the championship standings with Welsh driver Osian Pryce.
Daniel took his first BRC win on the Jim Clark Rally a month ago but celebrations were muted following a tragic accident that saw three spectators lose their lives and spectator safety is high on Daniel’s mind heading back to Scotland. “It’s vitally important that all spectators obey all marshals and safety officials at all times. Rallying in Ireland and Britain has an exemplary safety record and we all need to work together to maintain that. I had a great run in the Scottish Rally last year in the R2 Fiesta and with a championship to chase this year I’m hoping for another strong performance. Gravel isn’t my first love but I’m learning on the surface all the time and I was happy with my pace on the opening gravel round in Carlisle. I’ve had a few good tests in the DGM Citroen since then and my confidence is continually growing. The final half of the season contains two tarmac rallies where I’ll be pushing for the win so another useful points haul on the gravel this weekend is really needed to keep the pressure on Osian.”
As ever, Daniel will be partnered by the evergreen Arthur Kierans who will call the notes on the Dumfries based event. The rally kicks off at 5.30 on Friday evening with an autograph session at Whitesands before the cars leave for the nearby Heathhall spectator stage. Another highlight of the rally is a brand new Super Special stage that will take place on the Saturday near Dalbeattie. It too, is a fantastic opportunity for exciting viewing, with jumps, hairpins and a bridge that can all be seen from within a safe spectator area. Stages run throughout Saturday, with the leading crews arriving back in Dumfries at around 5.30pm.
